A GREY DECEMBER AFTERNOON ON EASTBOURNE BEACH
30 December 2016
You can’t beat the British seaside. Even on the greyest of grey days there’s something special about a south coast pier, and Eastbourne doesn’t disappoint.
My first stop of the day in Eastbourne was at the wonderful Towner Gallery. Home to the nation’s leading collection of Eric Ravilious drawings, sketches and prints the Towner is a genuinely brilliant place to visit especially when it’s grey and wet and cold outside. Then off for a stroll on the prom in the fading light. The air was still, the water pancake flat and the sky hidden behind a curtain of mist hanging over the sea.
Here’s Eastbourne pier, looming majestically out of the mist like a temple on scaffold poles. I do love being by the seaside.
