THE VIEW ACROSS THE STRAITS FROM SPAIN TOWARDS MOROCCO
18 October 2018
I could sit and watch this view all day. And I have done.
This is the view across an infinity pool in the hills at our favourite AirBnB above Tarifa, looking out towards Morocco. That's Tangiers port to the right and in the very far distance you can just see the Atlas Mountains. The Straits of Gibraltar are one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, the view is constantly changing with the time of day, the weather, the sea and the ships that go by. It would be impossible to get bored of this view. With a decent pair of binoculars you might even see dolphins or whales.
The coast of Andalucía has to be one of my favourite places. To the east of Gibraltar there are the sprawling tourist resorts of Estepona, Marbella and Torremolinos. Yet head half an hour west and you're in a world of unspoilt natural wonder. It's known as the Cádiz Province and it's dotted with white towns, barren hillsides, Boho kiteboarding beaches, cork trees, sherry, foodand birdsong. Flippin heck, this place is good!
And then you've got Gibraltar. Only the Brits could have created this idiosyncratic anomaly on the southern tip of Spain. Red post boxes, monkeys, Irish pubs and fish and chips. As Laurie Lee once commented, it's a piece of Portsmouth, sliced off and towed 500 miles south...
